Cosima Hawemann transforms photographic source images through overpainting, taking them from their familiar spheres of everyday media into a combination of figuration and abstraction. In doing so, she creates figures and landscapes situated somewhere between waking and dreaming. Hawemann is interested in the phenomenon of memory and its limited reliability. Her landscapes and figures oscillate within a painterly state between dissolution and manifestation. Cosima Hawemann overpaints polyester fabric exposed with photographic emulsion. In the process, she treats the fabric in such a way that a moiré effect is created. In some areas, the images are transparent. Cosima Hawemann combines photography and painting, bringing together figurative and abstract elements in her painting. Hawemann’s works explore the relationship between the media of photography and painting, while challenging and playing with the viewer’s habitual ways of seeing.
