> Vita

Viewed through the lens, Freya Hattenberger questions the representation of physicality and behavior. Her photographs are stagings in front of the camera, focusing on the relationship between body, action and space. Her artistic approach examines questions of identity and representation, sensuality and experience. This results in carefully staged, performative photographs. Her images act as vehicles for moments of pause, of self-reflection. They are references and tongue-in-cheek transformations of generally valid realities of life.

Aspects of the conditio humana are questioned in her light objects, combined with typography. Freya Hattenberger deals intensively with the medium of light. Physiologically, it is the basis for seeing images and all associated medial processes. As a metaphor, light stands as an instrument of cognition and a symbol of the creative spark. And in the form of fire, light forms the basis of our civilization. Its cultural scripts and narratives are the starting point and material for Freya Hattenberger's artistic work.

Freya Hattenberger graduated in media art with a focus on staged photography and video performance at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne at Prof. Jürgen Klauke, Prof. Marcel Odenbach and Prof. Matthias Müller. She attended the Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam for a postgraduate Master of Fine Arts. In addition to photography and light objects, her work is composed of video art, video performances/installations and sound performances. . In 2005 she received a scholarship from the Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes, in 2006 a studio scholarship at the Cité des Arts in Paris. In 2007 she was awarded the prize for "expanded media - media in space", Württembergischer Kunstverein Stuttgart, in 2008 she was awarded the Karl-Schmidt-Rottluff-Stipendium as well as the Prize for Young Artists of the Ministry NRW. In 2010 she participated in the exchange program TRANSFER France/NRW, and in 2018 in the exchange with Georgia/Armenia initiated by the Frauenkulturbüro NRW. In 2022 she will receive a working scholarship from Stiftung BildKunst. Her works have been exhibited at NCCA - Center for Contemporary Art (Moscow), Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, Galerie Rudolfinum (Prague), Tbilisi Triennial (Georgia), MSU Zagreb-Museum of Contemporary Art, Transmediale Berlin, KW Institute for Contemporary Art Berlin and MARTa Herford, among others.
